To successfully combine ambient and artificial light. With the addition of light modifiers and portable lighting equipment, light a portrait of a model on location in a variety of lighting conditions.
We will meet at the Station Road car parks in Aylesford, Kent, ME20. The first session will take place at The Hengist’s courtyard and the following 2 sessions will take place at various locations around the village. Lunch will be served at The Hengist fine dining restaurant.
The day will be split into 3 sessions:
Session A –
Introductions, group allocation and buddy systems will be introduced. A brief talk about the best ways to direct a model how to pose, the importance of hair, make up and a stylist, lens choices, light modifiers for effects and a Health & Safety briefing.
After Session A the group will be divided into classes of up to 6 students, half of you will shoot with David and Linda and the other half will shoot with Darren and Kat. After lunch groups will swap over.
Session B with David and Linda –
David predominantly photographs his subjects using natural light. Students will be invited to use the techniques and light modifiers demonstrated to tackle portraits in full sun, partial shade and full shade at various locations around the village.
Session C with Darren and Katerina –
Darren works as a commercial photographer and 9/10 works with flash and ambient light combined. Students will be introduced to the portable lighting system and shown techniques they can then try out for themselves to light a portrait with mixed lighting.
There will be an opportunity at the end for any feedback and questions.

The Hengist is in the heart of beautiful Aylesford village. The Grade II listed building was originally two houses, and was converted into a restaurant in 1980.
Downstairs is an informal brasserie-style dining room with bar which offers casual all-day dining. Decorated in a traditional style but with a quirky twist, downstairs is the place to come in for a coffee or a relaxed lunch.
Upstairs there are two fine-dining rooms – the Conservatory and the Crystal Room. These rooms offer a more formal, fine dining option. For this workshop we will be dining in the Conservatory, this has a beautiful terrace that leads down to the outside garden where some of the tuition will take place.
The chefs have put together a menu which is seasonal and prepared using the best ingredients, from local sources wherever possible. Menu options will be available closer to the date and will need to be completed in advance of the course date.
The course includes 2 courses and a glass of wine (175ml), additional drinks/courses can be purchased at your own expense.
